Susan Whitehouse
Fibre Artist
Susan retired from teaching Biology/ Chemistry in 2016 and now creates knitted and woven shawls and scarves from her workshop in Cold Norton, nr Stone. She describes herself as a “self-taught” Fibre Artist. Her collection includes:
• Finely hand knitted bridal and christening shawls
• Sumptuous, flamboyant triangular shawls woven on her handmade triloom
• Rectangular shawls and scarves which she weaves on traditional floor looms
Whilst many items are worked using commercial yarns, Susan also uses her own hand-spun yarns in some of her creations, worked from raw, locally sourced fleeces making these items truly “handmade”
Susan gains joy from the symmetry and repetition of constructing her designs. Whether that be from the gentle clicking of her needles when knitting or the rhythmic sounds of the shuttle making its way across warp threads when weaving, all bring her contentment. Her passion for knitting, stems from her loving Grandmothers . . . both of whom suffered from the same fascination for making useful fabric from a simple strand of yarn. Neither of these Ladies were spinners or weavers, so Susan has had to acquire these skills after numerous years of trial and error, patience and practice, practice and yet more practice. She very much hopes that you like the fruits of her labours.
