Mark Veale
Abstract Painter

It is Mark’s intention to make whilst avoiding the interference of his conscious self as far as is possible. Mark has devised strategies that, together with a certain frame of mind, remove the work from the vulnerable position of being worked on by someone who thinks he knows what he wants to make, how it should look and what it should have to say. There are many beautiful and moving things made by or as a result of human activity that were not motivated by a desire to make something attractive or profound. He has been awarded a first class honours degree and a master of arts degree with distinction.

Mark is concerned with the making process. How one might subvert the usual intellectual mechanisms of making to allow the production of a work that is less imbued with the personal preferences and idiosyncrasies of the artist. This approach allows this artist at least a freedom of expression during the making, unrestrained by the tyranny of having a preconceived goal. For a long time now Mark has been developing strategies to subvert the making of anything that was predetermined . It is his ideal that he does not know what it is he is to make; preparing a meal from what is found in the cupboard, not gathering the ingredients to satisfy a recipe.

Recipes for making assume the outcome and the maker consciously works towards the envisioned result. Stresses can build, apprehension, deliberations, fear of error, doubt, disappointment, a momentary enthusiasm acted upon then later regretted and then reconsidered; it's a struggle. This may be just the journey some artists relish but I want to find works that will not be found if I am to be encumbered by the constraint I feel from conscious deliberation and intent. The strategies I use are not rigid, they are not rules and they can be employed or discarded at will, much as an ape would swing through the trees. You take what is next to hand, what is needed to keep the journey going . There is a flow, a freedom of gesture, a confidence of knowing what you're doing but not where you are supposed to be going.
